There are several factors to consider with the display.

Size

Obviously the larger the screen the better, if your budget allows. It’s easier to read from larger screen and larger ones will provide more detail. Resolution

Screen resolution is usually expressed in a vertical and horizontal pixel count, of course, the hight pixel count the clearer image the screen displays. If you fish in deep water, the resolution will be very important.

Color or Mono?

If your budget allows, go for color ones. It’s much easier to interpret what the fish finder is telling you. Well, mono is OK, too.

Transducer

A fish finder won’t work without a transducer. If you are not clear whether a fish finder comes with a transducer, you should always ask. There are several types of transducer you should know.

Transom mount transducer – This is maybe the most common. The transducer mounts on the back of your boat and contacts well with the water. For smaller fishing boats, this is typically the best solution.

Thru-hull transducer – as the name implies, this transducer mounts through the hull. The advantage of this kind of transducer is it will not be subject to cavitation interference caused by the motor and hull of the boat when it passes through the water. This type of transducer is generally used on relatively larger boats, and typically more expensive than a transom mount transducer. In addition, you may also need a faring block to protect the transducer. Temperature and speed are available with this type of transducer.

In-hull or Shoot thru hull transducer – this type is not so common. This transducer actually is mounted inside the boat and emits sound waves through the hull. It’ll need some experience to use it well and it’s expensive.

Sonar Power

This is a parameter indicates how powerful the sonar is, measured in watts. This is especially important in deep water, because the higher the power is, the more power a fishfinder has, the stronger the return signal is. On a fishfinder, there are two ways to display sonar power – Peak to Peak and RMS. Peak to Peak is 8 times of RMS.

Dual Frequency and Single Frequency

A single frequency fishfinder transmits its signal at a frequency of 200khz and gives you a relatively narrow view. A dual frequency fishfinder transmits signal at 200khz and 50khz, you will always get the possible view of the water under your boat, whatever shallow water or deeper water. A dual frequency fishfinder usually is not too much expensive than single frequency one. If you choose a dual frequency fishfinder, please also be sure that the transducer is also dual frequency.

Fish Finder Basics and How does It Work

A fish finder is made of only a few basic parts – a transducer, transmitter, receiver, and a feedback device, which in most cases is a display screen. In a nutshell, an electrical impulse is emitted from the transmitter, then transformed into a sound wave and sent out into the water by the transducer. The echo wave is then captured by the transducer which then converts it back into an electrical signal, amplified by the receiver, processed and sent to the screen as a graphical representation.

The Transducer

The transducer is heart of the fish finder which sends and receives the sound waves. There are several types of transducer – transom mount transducer, thru-hull transducer, In-hull transducer, etc. Often classified by how they are mounted.

The Display

The display shows a history of the received echoes, which will be translated into graphics. Each display comprises a number of pixels, small square blocks that make up the image. The more pixels the better resolution and image clarity have. Some budget fish finders provides a black and white display, also called mono fish finders. And high-end units will have a color view.

Steps to Use Your Fish Finder

  1. Read your manual! First of first, you should carefully read through the manual. It can never be emphasized enough how important it is to read the manual to become acquainted with the unit you purchased.
  2. Mount the transducer. To avoid radio interference and turbulence, please mount the transducer far enough away from the engine. According to the type of your transducer, mount it where it should be, but be sure that no more than one layer of hull between the transducer and the bottom of the boat.
  3. Start adjusting one feature at a time. Set the sensitivity control between 75% and 100%. This is the very most important control to set correctly.
  4. Increase the chart speed. You don’t want to miss one big fish, do you? Use faster chart speed when the boat is moving slower and slower chart speed when the boat is moving faster.
  5. Adjust the suppressor setting. It’s used for eliminating the back ground noise, but if your transducer is properly mounted it is generally unnecessary. Setting the suppressor too high can block the sonar signal entirely. So in general, you would want this setting off.
  6. Time to interpret the display and drop your bait. Most fish finders can tell you clearly what is and is not a fish on the display. The X-axis of the image represents time, oldest to the left, you can adjust the depth cursor to cut through the fish arches, and the unit will tell you exactly how deep those fish are. Now you’ll know exactly when and where to drop your bait.

How to Read Your Fish finder

  2. The line on the left side of screen and digit indicate the depth. This is the most important information to most anglers.
  3. As we mentioned in the previous review, you can take advantage of the trackback feature to review your sonar history. Simply press the keypad to the left until the screen starts to move in reverse and then the sonar history bar appears at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Examine the bottom to see the character of bottom or if there is anything on the bottom, or growing from it.
